COVID-19 Office Cleaning – Keeping Your Staff Safe
Just when we thought we have COVID-19 under control there has been a resurgence in Victoria (they’ve gone back into lock down at the time of writing). There has been an increase in transmission again in NSW. Much of the concern has been about transmission within workplaces.
For this reason, we wanted to write a quick article about COVID-19 Office Cleaning. We wanted to share with you some tips that you can implement yourself. These tips can also be useful when deciding who you should choose to do the professional cleaning for your office cleaning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
It’s important to keep your workplace safe. We hope this article helps.
COVID-9 Transmission – Things to Know.
There are two possible transmission sources for COVID-19 in the office. The main transmission source is thought to be through close contact with an infected person – with the virus transmitted via respiratory droplets (eg. coughs and sneezes.) It’s also possible that transmission can occur via touching a surface that may have the virus on it. The length of time that the virus can stay on a surface depends on the surface material.
Routine Office Cleaning and Disinfection
It’s important that your workplace is cleaned daily. You need to pay particular attention to your regularly touched surfaces – desks, benches, taps, kitchen surfaces, door handles, light switches, bathrooms and desks for example. There may be other areas to focus on in your business. For example, if your office is over multiple levels you may need to look at stair rails as well.
You should follow up your cleaning by disinfecting these same surfaces. Cleaning is physically removing any dirt from surfaces. However, disinfecting involves chemically wiping down surfaces to kill germs and viruses on those surfaces. A combination of cleaning and disinfecting is vital to make sure you have the best opportunity to kill the virus on any surface.

How is COVID-19 Office Cleaning different if you have a suspected or confirmed case?
If there is a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 in your office, then you should make sure ALL potential areas of contamination are cleaned and disinfected. If there is an area of the office where the patient has spent significant time, then it should be cleared of people until it has been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. These areas might include offices, bathrooms and other common areas. In the case of COVID-19 it’s better to be cautious to minimise risks to any other staff (or clients who visit).
Make sure that anyone doing the cleaning and disinfecting of suspected COVID-19 contaminated areas is wearing PPE (personal protective equipment – masks, gloves etc) and that the PPE is safely disposed of after the cleaning is done.
You may not need to close down your entire workplace. If the person who is suspected, or confirmed, of having COVID-19 has only used certain parts of the office, it’s only those areas that may need cleaning. However, if you are unsure, then it’s better to be safe and clean the entire workplace. Make sure no one else visits potentially contaminated areas until they have been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. If in doubt, seek advice from the Department of Health.
Is it time to call in the professionals for COVID-19 Office Cleaning?
Given the current pandemic, and with case numbers rising, it’s important that thorough COVID-19 office cleaning and disinfecting occurs daily. Virus transmission has been growing again across the country and we need to keep this under control for the safety of your staff and the safety of their, and your, family.
Many people are asymptomatic so they may come into the office without realising that they are infectious. You may know someone who is positive and they may not have shown any symptoms.
For this reason, it’s important to ensure that cleaning and disinfecting is done properly. If you are worried that you don’t have the skills or experience to manage this cleaning and disinfecting with internal staff, it might be worth investigating professional COVID-19 office cleaning for your premises.
