While the order of the cleaning matters when it comes to efficiency, there are also some tips for routine cleaning you can use to make sure your home is always kept clean.

So let’s get started.

order to clean your house

How can cleaning your house in a certain order save you time and energy?

Have you ever spent a lot of time doing something only to feel like you’ve accomplished nothing? Have you ever felt overwhelmed by a task and spent hours procrastinating because you didn’t know where to start?

If you’re anything like me, this has definitely happened to you in the past. In that case, you’ll probably be aware that having a plan is often helpful. Cleaning your house can be similar and having an oder to the tasks can make all the difference.

Once you get a certain room or section of your house clean, you don’t want to have to touch it again until the next time you have to clean.

You need to create a system to clean your house that works for you.

Everyone is different and has different priorities. When you clean your house, you need to consider what is important to you and how much time you have to do it. We all tend to want to do the worst things last but often it’s better to get them out of the way right at the beginning.

Once you’ve created a routine, the order in which you clean your house will come naturally. You’ll find that you’ll save more time as soon as you can settle into a routine because you’ll enter a state of flow. Doing that will help you move from one task to the next without wasting time thinking about what you have to do next.

Guidelines on the order to clean your house

1. Start with the cleaning tasks that require chemicals to soak in, or that can be going while you do other things

For example, you can start by stacking and running the dishwasher, spray oven cleaner in your oven, start a load of laundry, or pour bleach into your toilet. All of these things either work while you’re cleaning, or make cleaning easier when you get to these parts of your house.

2. Clean from the top down

There’s nothing worse than cleaning something and then having to clean it again. When you dust your house, the dust will fall and settle on tables, bench-tops, and the floor. If you do this last, you’ll find yourself re-cleaning these surfaces after you’ve dusted. Work with gravity, not against it!

Similarly, it often seems easier to clean the top floor first and then the bottom floor. I’m not sure if it just psychological, but to me it seems easier to lug the vacuum cleaner and cleaning products upstairs before you’re tired. Then you can work with gravity again when you bring everything downstairs.

3. Tidy first, then clean

For each room, it will be much easier to clean if you don’t have a bunch of junk in your way. That’s why thee best order to clean your house is by removing clutter and tidying before you get your hands dirty.

Take some time to put things away to make cleaning easier for yourself. As

This is particularly important when it come to cleaning your kitchen, bathrooms, and floors. As home organisation guru Marie Kondu says “everything has a home“. When all of your stuff has a home, it’s easier to know where to put everything when you’re tidying up.

4. Clean the ‘wet areas’ first

Bathrooms and kitchens are known as ‘wet areas’. These often take the most time to clean. That’s why they should be first in the order you clean your house.

Once you’ve done step 1 and 3, dust everything and then get down to work in your bathrooms and kitchen. The cleaning solutions would have had time to soak in, so your job should be easier.

Get these out of the way while you still have energy to do some scrubbing.

5. Clean the floors last

This is probably the easiest part of your chore. That’s why it’s last in the order to clean your house. In addition, all the dust would have settled by now. That will make it easier to mop and vacuum it up.

Work from top to bottom so gravity is on your side.

Extra tip. Vacuum all floors first before you mop. to make sure any bigger pieces of dirt don’t get stuck in your mop.

Extra tip 2. Use a disinfectant in your mopping water to keep your home hygienic.
